Winter Safety Driving Tips

Michigan residents are no stranger to winter months. Driving in the winter increases the chances of an accident. Over 1,300 people are killed and more than 116,800 people are injured in vehicle crashes on snowy, slushy or icy pavement every year (via Safe Winter Roads). In Michigan, $251 million is lost per day due to road closures during winter months (via Highway Users Alliance).

Here are some tips to ensure you and your vehicle are ready for winter driving:

  • Always wear a seatbelt
  • Do not drive if you feel fatigued
  • Make sure your gas tank is half full to avoid freezing
  • Look up weather advisory warnings before going on a long trip
  • Don’t use cruise control on potentially slippery roads
  • Avoid using parking break
  • Make sure your vehicle is in peak performing conditions
  • Take your time and keep a further distance from other vehicles than usual
